궁전숯불갈비 Gungjeon Charcoal-Grilled Galbi — Real charcoal-grilled ribs tucked into the neighborhood

Donnattang · Visited 2026-10-08

#1 An old neighborhood restaurant

66-1 Seoknam-ro. It feels exactly like an old neighborhood restaurant. This is my second or third visit. I come in as soon as they open for lunch and order 2 servings of pork ribs and a bowl of rice.

#2 Charcoal

The charcoal arrives, then the ribs go on. Look at that beautiful color. I can imagine the flavor before taking a bite. The charcoal aroma rises first.

#3 The first piece

Tender. Yet satisfyingly chewy. The marinade is sweet and salty, backed by the aroma of charcoal. This is what ribs cooked over real charcoal taste like.

#4 An irresistible combination

One piece of rib must go into the onion sauce. Charcoal aroma and onion sauce. Ah, that combination wins me over.

#5 My favorite bite

I lay out a slice of pickled radish, then add rib meat, garlic, and rice. This is my favorite mouthful here. Rice with kimchi, a wrap, another bite of ribs. At the end, I scrape up every last grain of rice.

#6 Grandma-style soybean-paste stew

A bowl of rice comes with a mini soybean-paste stew. It tastes just like a country grandmother’s cooking. And the aged kimchi here is lovely. There is marinated crab and jelly among the side dishes too. What a neighborhood find.

#7 While filming

Ah… my rib on the bone burned while I was filming. I was looking at the camera and let a piece burn. It was still delicious.

A word for visitors from abroad

One serving of pork ribs is 300g of Korean pork. Starting with 2 servings gives you a generous amount. Order a bowl of rice: it comes with a small soybean-paste stew. Try dipping the ribs in the onion sauce.

No festivals or famous sights today either — for me, a meal like this is a trip in itself.
