시골집 Sigoljip — Pickled perilla leaves are the key to this spicy marinated duck
#1 At the door
Half past one in the afternoon, after the lunch rush has eased. Tucked into Geobuk-ro 84beon-gil, the place still feels like an old neighborhood restaurant. It is easy to walk past the sign, but I am a regular. A little place the locals know. When I want spicy marinated duck, I come here and nowhere else.
#2 On the grill
My order is always the same. Spicy marinated duck, a whole duck. The owner cooks it for me. While a generous heap of chives and mushrooms cook with the meat, the side dishes fill the table first. Every one has its place. I save the pickled garlic and pickled perilla leaves. They have a job to do later.
#3 The first bite
First, just the duck. Only meat on my spoon. It is softer than I expected. Chewy and springy, with a satisfying bite the longer I chew. The seasoning is sweet and spicy. By this point, I understand. This is why people in the neighborhood come here for spicy marinated duck.
#4 Soju
“Ah, I cannot have this without soju.” One glass.
#5 A perilla-leaf wrap
This is the key to the place. I spread out a pickled perilla leaf and pile on duck, mushrooms cooked alongside it, chives, garlic, and even the pickled garlic from the side dishes. Then I wrap it up. Salty perilla leaves meet the sharpness of garlic, and the same duck becomes a different dish. If I finish the meal without those pickled leaves, I have only had half the experience. Definitely make a wrap.
#6 Fried rice
When the meat is almost gone, it is time for fried rice. The rice cooks in the duck fat, and the owner even shapes it into a heart. No reaching for the spoon just yet. I wait until a crisp rice crust forms underneath. This rice cooked in duck fat is another delicious part of the meal.
#7 To finish
A glass of cola washes away the richness. Generous portions, a friendly owner, and side dishes that bring out the best in the duck. Everything I want in one meal.
A word for visitors from abroad
For spicy marinated duck, this is my place. Please, please, please try it wrapped in pickled perilla leaves. Point to ‘오리주물럭(1마리)’ on the menu, or play the Korean ordering audio on this page.

No festivals or famous sights today either — for me, a meal like this is a trip in itself.
